Conductor: Robin Newton

Wednesday 25th June 2014, 7.30pm
St John’s Smith Square

Programme:

– Stravinsky Fireworks
– Panufnik Sinfonia Sacra
– Dvořák Symphony No. 8 in G major, op. 88

Stravinsky’s Fireworks, a present for Rimsky-Korsakov’s daughter’s wedding, preceded Panufnik’s emotional tribute to Poland’s Millennium of Christianity and Statehood, which we chose to mark Panufnik’s centenary year. The concert concluded with Dvořák’s 8th Symphony, dedicated to the Bohemian Academy on his election.

We were honoured to have Lady Camilla Panufnik and a group from Boosey & Hawkes, Panufnik’s publisher, at the concert.  Lady Panufnik wrote to us afterwards: “Dear Salomon Orchestra, Thank you for your exciting performance of my husband’s Sinfonia Sacra.   From the very beginning, with your excellent trumpeters sounding forth at the 4 corners of the stage, all your instrumentalists performed with deep commitment and a beautiful sound. Your conductor, who told me he had been in love with Sinfonia Sacra since he was 9 years old, conveyed a profound understanding of the structure as well as the drama of this work,  and it was a great joy for me to hear you all playing it with such warmth and power.”
