Boulanger – Du matin de printemps
Debussy – Iberia
Boulanger – D’un soir triste
Strauss – Eine Alpinesinfonie
In her short life Lili Boulanger was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome. She finished her thematically connected but very different short pieces in the year of her death 100 years ago,10 days before Debussy succumbed. Iberia was completed 10 years earlier, evoking contrasting impressions of Spain.
Many years in gestation, orchestrating the huge forces for Alpine Symphony took just 3 months, Richard Strauss working ‘as a cow gives milk’. Cowbells can be heard among the vast soundscape of this towering work.
Tickets available from St John’s Smith Square or from members of the orchestra.
